It was the night of the black and the whites; it was the night of goodbye kisses and last dances and as usual a lot of singing and swinging. It was after the club toned down the music and only when Gabriel aka Freddie our in-house rock star started singing the Bohemian Rhapsody when it all came to me. P2 had just ended which means some of us would change campuses and we might probably never see each other ever again. I had this sudden rush in my head and everything blurred in front of me, I agree the celebrations had started rather early at around 4 immediately after Sameer’s hilarious POM exam but I think more than the alcohol affect it was a concoction of thoughts which was tripping me. I wanted to freeze the moment and just look at everyone around and relive every bit of the last 4 months I had spent with them. I wanted to speak to all of them, the ones I won’t be able to meet again, the ones I wanted to finish our conversation with and the ones I wanted to start some. I even shut my eyes and pinched myself only to wake up and realise it was really true 40 % of MBA done.
After the swinging Peruvian Rodolfo aka “Aladdin” told me I need to write my next post on our drive back home I knew it would be easy. It’s always easy when there is a rush of emotions in your head. My mind was like a kaleidoscope of memories at that point in time. And even though time had just flown by and P2 was painfully short the build-up of memories and experiences was just outstanding. It was fresh in my head and it seemed it was only yesterday when about a 100 of us got drunk on the clarki bridge for the first time. The endless lunches, the endless nights, the hangovers, the bloody barbeques, the national weeks, class acts in the class and outside of it, all of it was running in front of me. I will miss getting drunk with the nasty Pizarro who is the uncrowned king of cheat sheets, looking at Pat aka the energy gangster and just laugh, having a smoke with Philip and listen to his ideas of changing the world, seeing Charlie Taylor’s stunts which earned him the super human status and a golden pass at raffles hospital, listening to Nuno’s playlist, Tahir’s fantasies and Gabriel’s songs about food and love.
I will even miss burning the midnight oil in the BOR’s with fellow sluggers Ricardo , Joris in P1 which didn’t really push our grades but definitely pushed our limits and in P2 the fellow library revellers Zori and Mateen who gave me the courage to sit one more hour every hour for 3 straight days. I can list a lot more down but then it would just seems like an Oscar speech which it is not. Honestly if I could I would thank everyone around for making these 4 months just so incredibly great. I am sure that the next 3 periods would be even more intense and leave us with enough inventories of stories. Some that we could tell our grand kids, some to our folks and friends back home and some well some just to no one. Looking forward to a shivering start of P3 in France, my tryst with some winter sports, some dungeon time with my new house mates at Chateau De Tavers, lot of wine next to the fireplace and the one thing I dig the most conversations.
A story about my epic INSEAD journey , the friends I make , the lessons I learn and the all new me.

Long & Short
Its 2 am and I am sitting in the library struggling to get my way around valuing the Calls and the Puts and if that wasn’t enough there is the death spiral call and the no regret put pending. I always doubted that these finance guys have something weirdly cool about them, I believe it now.
I don’t know why but it’s during times like these when I am tripping on a lethal combination of Chicane and Hillion, I feel like looking within, taking a deep breath and looking around. It’s been almost 4 months already and 40 % of my MBA done already. So what has changed? Am I gonna kick ass in the big bad corporate jungle? Am I gonna lead my people to glory? Will I rule the world someday? phawwwwwww. Dono about that but I think I will do just fine.
Having said that I recon I definitely have more arsenal in my bag when it comes to the mind-blowing human element which makes or breaks the universe. I am more sensitive to the world around; I am more equipped to identify stereotypes and people types without being too judgemental or making a monkey out of myself. I think I can even read minds , I almost feel like the oracle sometimes. I can anticipate actions and reactions. I know the difference between how a consultant, a banker, a marketer and an engineer would attack a problem or each other. I also know the difference between how French, a Brazilian, a Singaporean and an American would try to solve the very same problem without killing each other. It’s amazing how 4 months of living in and out of each other can teach you so freaking much. I look around and I just see awesomeness, there is so much to learn, so much to unlearn and I am doing that every single moment.
I have stopped seeking the answer to the super critical where am I going from here question now. I am sure where ever I end up it will be awesome. I am going to spend the next 6 months honestly bonding with all the super humans around and making this year an absolutely smashing year for me and those around.
Good Life = Long “Friends” + Long “Alcohol" + Long "Music"– (Short "Ego” +Short “inhibitions")

Grades don’t matter what matters Is love!!!
I didn’t understand this slide when Ioana our super cool Decision Sciences Prof showed it to us but now it’s my desktop page and I look at it at least once a day. We all just received our P1 results and I realised that most of us fall within 1 Standard Deviation of the mean on the Z curve. PWAAAA. In my opinion as long as we achieve this we are good. So the lessons to be learnt are again one of prioritizing work and play. But it’s easier said than done for most Asians who are very competitive. It’s difficult for them to come over this very basic nature of being on the top of the class. I will be lying if I said that I didn’t want a higher GPA however I look at the following and feel happy and I hope it will help some of you who are in process of joining INSEAD
1.It’s been proved that there is a negative correlation between high grades and high salaries at INSEAD. In my opinion high salaries is a function of several factors and grades is a very small part of it. You can be on the top of the class but yet not make it big because you lacked other more important things.
2.The first and foremost benefit you derive out of INSEAD is your network which is difficult to build sitting in the library or in a lonely BOR. Your network will ensure consistent cash flows in whatever role you will play in future and I believe that recruiters will see your network as a sign of superb cross cultural capabilities. Imagine knowing at least one person from each country worth its name in the world and you being able to call him in times of need. Cool! I am sure it is but you have to spend some drunken evenings together to be able to build some ground.
3.Second would be the practical understanding of a subject. Most of us in INDIA are used to the Socratic way of teaching. The teacher talks for an hour you sleep , text , flirt with the girl next to you and you go home. INSEAD Prof’s actually puts lessons in perspective. Knowing how to calculate regression doesn’t make any sense if you can’t read it and calculating the value of Beta is useless unless you know where it would be used. Remember you will always have experts in this field who you could hire in future but no one will teach you when you need to hire them.
4.Big picture Perspective is probably the most crucial factor. Often the best paid people are the ones who have a vision and who can bullshit about anything under the sun. Increasing your bandwidth is what one should focus at. If you want to get in to details do that in one subject that you think you are really interested in. Rest of the time spend broadening your horizons.
So probably the best thing to do is get the big picture perspective, live every bit of this experience and build lifelong relationships. Learn enough to make you savvy but not a nerd. And remember that all that matters is love.

GMAT
No matter what they say GMAT is important so stop asking questions like I have a 10 year experience can I do with 520 GMAT. Answer is no If you are aiming at a top school at INSEAD.Well you might have a chance if you are a NASA mission specialist or an Olympic athlete but otherwise no point even wasting your time on essays. GMAT tests your basic aptitude and if you can’t score on this test there can be two reasons either you are not smart enough or you did not take it seriously and both these reasons are not helpful.
So what is the right score well it depends where you come from and who are you competing against? If you are from India or China you better score above 700 because most applicants from these two countries have a 700 + score. Considering INSEAD’s diversity rule they will only select a certain % of applicants from one country and given that the number of applicants can be rather large from India and China competition gets tougher. So it’s better to start prep and take it seriously.
You should ideally put in about 4 months of Prep before you take your test. If you are aiming at October deadlines start in Jan so by May you are over with GMAT and you can put your time in essays. This also gives you time to retake the test just in case you didn’t score well. So my advice starts early.
Should you join a coaching centre depends on how self-disciplined are you if you are you can prep at home using various guides like Kaplan and other online tutorials but if you are like me who needs to be pushed joining a coaching centre is a good idea. They can teach you techniques which you might not be able to learn otherwise. In India I suggest go with Jamboree over Princeton, this is just from personal experience and can opinions vary. Also Kaplan guides are better for higher scores. Do as many tests possible and do them seriously and once you think you have prepped enough give the tests which are on the official GMAT site. They are the closest to the real GMAT and would give you your expected score accurately.

UNITED COLORS OF INSEAD
Liechtenstein is a country which has just 36000 citizens and one of them is my classmate at INSEAD and the story just starts here.
INSEAD is like a melting pot for the world and it seems like I have been presented with a permanent membership of the UNITED NATIONS. Where else I ask would you get a chance to chill/travel /go crazy/get drunk and learn from/with folks from Moldova, Uzbekistan , Nigeria , Chile , Bulgaria , Poland, Mexico , Romania in addition to the regular suspects from Germany , USA ,France , China and India.
The diversity that INSEAD boasts about is definitely not a marketing gimmick. Every single person in my batch atleast is a specimen which would be difficult to replicate. And it’s not just the nationalities where the diversity shows it’s also the backgrounds educational and professional.
In just ½ of the batch which started at the Singapore campus we have a British consultant who is also master chef and whose last degree was a PHD , an Italian banker who is also a choir master and a pianist, a Pilipino who is an award winning singer/songwriter, a Chilean who was a professional tennis player, an American yacht maker, a French commercial pilot ,a Swiss Doctor and an Australian lawyer . And this is just a random sample of 8 people I am sure normal distribution doesn’t apply to the batch.
Just imagine what one can learn from a pool of such extraordinary men and women. Everyone has something to learn from everyone and everyone is out here to learn. The possibilities are unlimited and there doesn’t seem to be a max limit to what one can learn. I am in the 2nd week of my intense INSEAD experience and it seems that I have been strapped on to a jet plane which aint stopping before a year. The good news is I have rock stars as my co-passengers and I know its goanna be the ride of my life.

It Begins.......
I have landed in Singapore and somewhere in the middle of lugging my 8 bags and eating my first breakfast in Singi I realised how the world has suddenly changed. How one decision to join INSEAD has changed the course of my life. I now know it’s right when they say you have the power to write your own destiny. I guess I am rewriting mine and it feels good.
This is my first time in Singapore and what hit me immediately is how streamlined the whole city is. Everything from the buildings to the trees are well aligned and colour coordinated. It’s almost sterile and it seems the govt. even plans the distance between two wild bushes and the time between two bird cries. The fact is its amazingly green and has ample space for one to run, walk or cycle which is superb and I am loving my morning runs.
Weather is humid and my first trip to INSEAD which is a 10 minute walk ended up with me being drenched and exhausted after which I decided to tuck away all my denims and shop for some cargo shorts because that’s the way life is gonna be here it seems.
I am spending most of my time between trying to go through the pre-readings and exploring cheap food courts which don’t just serve ox tongue and frog legs. I would have to admit that I haven’t really succeeded in any one of the above .I have also discovered the symbiotic relationship between good chicken meals and pre-readings. I push myself to study for 2 hours so that I can go find the perfect chicken meal and eating a good chicken meal keeps me motivated enough to get back and study for another 2 hours.
The time when I am not on an expedition to find food I am in the superb pool at Heritage with my lovely wife Priyanka or outside of the pool having beers with my new classmates who live in the same building. I know this time is short lived and soon we all will take a deep dive in to the world of cases and assignments but till then it’s all about food, beers, pool, attempts on pre-readings and quality time with my Priyanka.

pre-reads vs pre-meets & pre-eats.
Almost 30 days back I took printouts of the pre-readings. I think I am still old school when it comes to reading books and making notes. The so called pre readings were more than what I think I studied in my three years of graduation. I wasn’t bogged down by the sheer number of pages and decided to take up the challenge .My first attempt lasted 7 minutes after which I slept flat on my papers. 2nd 3rd and 4th attempt took me to 20 minutes at a stretch and I was already brimming with confidence and feeling enlightened when my head started thinking of what all I need to pack , who all I need to meet and what all I need to eat.
It’s been a month since that day and the pre-meetings have taken over the pre-readings. Indian goodbyes are world famous in India and can extend beyond imagination. I have had 3 or more farewells with the same set of friends and relatives in the past 1 month. I have just finished a cross country trip meeting my extended family making sure everyone gets to meet the dark horse of the family who is gonna win the race one day. In the past one month I also prayed to /visited all the Gods and Goddesses to make sure I have a bright future read dean’s list and a signing bonus. The goodbyes are still on and I am currently making a list of people who are coming to drop me and Priyanka at the airport on the back of my corporate finance book, it stands at 10 on the last count and is increasing by the hour.
All these pre meetings over the past one month came with a lot of love and love in India is equal to butter chicken, butter paneer and butter nan all of which has added massively to my waistline. The amount of Indian food I have eaten in the past 1 month could have fed an entire village but I went on till my stomach gave up. The only time I took a break from food was when I was drinking good old whiskey with my chuddy buddies who patiently heard all my stories about INSEAD, about how great the school is, about how smart my future classmates are, about how cool the national weeks are etc.
It’s been a month of goodbyes and food and right now emotions are running super high in my head along with whiskey and butter in my blood. I hate to admit it but I knew that I might never meet some of the people I said goodbyes to so I made sure I met everyone who mattered to me before I took the giant leap.
Even though I have to slog my ass now to complete my pre readings I am happy that I prioritised pre meetings over pre readings and hugged & kissed everyone I love. Anyways micro economics never stood a chance against good old whiskey and butter chicken.

MBA APPLICATION : TIME MANAGEMENT
Most of the aspiring MBA applicants are surprised when I tell them that I started my Application process in Feb 2011 for the MBA batch which starts in August 2012.Thats almost 18 months. I think one of the most important ingredients which will help you securing admission in the college you like is time management.
Most applicants use the tackle one at a time approach so GMAT is the priority and most spend months studying for GMAT then comes applications and essays and in the end is the interviews. This approach is not entirely wrong if you have timed yourself well .Timing is everything and you need to make sure you have enough time for each of the above.
School Selection: 2 month at least: Please don’t be part of a RAT race in selecting your college. Just because you are in INDIA, ISB doesn’t become the best school for you or just because Havard tops all MBA ranking it’s not the best value for you. It’s important to recognise the set of right colleges which fit your criteria and bill. Research online, attend the info sessions if you can, talk to aluminise. (Refer to my post on college selection)
GMAT: 5 Months: It’s not a difficult exam and is more about common sense and skills rather than theory, calculus or advanced statistics. Join a prep program immediately and give the exams when in top form. Leave enough time for a second attempt.
Application: 1-2 month per school: Writing good about yourself is the most difficult thing in the world and if you are the kinds who take a week to write your CV you better budget a lot of time to each essay. There would be overlaps in essay but every school is looking for a different you. You need more time if you have more schools simple.
Interviews: Prepare in advance:you will get about between 10 days to a month for interviews but if you have applied to multiple schools the interviews would fall in the same month. So its better to prepare certain key questions in advance.
Financing and scholarships: 6 Months – 1 year: In case of INSEAD you can apply for 5 scholarships and a good scholarship essays would take time like your application essays. Financing you MBA can be the most difficult and sometimes harrowing experiences especially if you are in INDIA and don’t want to spend your parents hard earned money. You need to arrange for appx 75 lakh Indian Rupees and only you know how much time you would take to arrange for the same.
So if you are looking at the batch starting August 2014 you need to start in Jan 2013 Max.
I will detail more on each of these important factors in my upcoming posts

INSEAD ALL THE WAY
It was my last day in Delhi and yes it was a little heavy leaving the city which has given me so much and made me the man I am . However its nothing compared to the excitement and anxiety of starting my life at INSEAD. It feels almost like I have gained independence from all the shackles which were holding me from my ultimate flight to glory. It seems like my life now on will always have two eras pre INSEAD and post INSEAD.
The coveted INSEAD experience which all the alumni spoke about in my interviews actually starts from the day you get your interview calls. You meet in most cases two INSEAD Alumni who are assigned as per your level of seniority and your field of experience. In my case I was interviewed by the CEO of SAP INDIA and the MD of Arcelor Mittal India. Both of them were leaders in their field and need less to say super busy but I could see the same passion and pride in their eyes for INSEAD and they made sure that they spent enough time to select the right people who will be added to their alma matter. One of them loved the INSEAD experience so much that he went twice once as a student and once as a partner. From the moment I finished my interviews I had this urge of getting connected to and be a part of this super powerful cult of INSEAD alumni’s and my prayers begin.
It was early November when I got a selection mail from KELLOGG one of the other two schools I had applied to. I was super excited however I wanted INSEAD as if something karmic was pulling me towards INSEAD. Next day morning HANNY ( my contact at INSEAD) called me and I knew it that I had made it to the league of extraordinary men and women.
Ever since that super day it’s been a joyride. Followed by the call you get a starters kit which explains the steps you need to follow, things you need to do over the next 6 months. Most importantly you get your password for MBACONNECT which is like an all in one platform for all students before and during their programme. Though MBA CONNECT was great in terms of the info it provided it was a little limited in terms of the social connect. I felt like connecting to all my batch mates and went ahead created a facebook group for my class. The best abrupt decision I took, the group exploded and now has over 550 students. All of us have been interacting every day, making travel plans, sharing info about almost everything under the sun. There are meets planned all across the world and I have already met most of the students going from DELHI
The energy is unbelievably addictive. Every day I eat , drink , sleep and dream INSEAD. Every day I think about my life at and after INSEAD. Every day I feel that I have become part of a select group of super achievers from every single country I have ever heard off. Every day I feel that I along with my 500 super smart, creative, collaborative mates am gonna change the world. Every day I dream of the spectacular year that’s gonna start in about 20 days …Its INSEAD all the way.

How to rate an MBA
So the Financial Times MBA ratings just came out and well I am sure like me everyone checked the ranking of the school we have gotten through or we want to go. I am happy INSEAD maintains its top 10 slot. I think its always important to create your own parameters and rankings apart from of-course referring to the world at large. Also scoring a 700+ in GMAT and having a versatile background will help you exercise your choice and open more doors. Below are 11 factors according to me which can help you create your own ranking .
1)Age – If you are older than maybe 29 than a 1 year school will give you the best value as your opportunity cost for a 2 years course would be higher and you would be graduating with a class which would have an average age of 25 -27
2)Professional stage – If you are someone who has about 8 -10 years of experience already at the top end of mid management say ( MD-2 level in a midsized company ) or say ( an AVP , DGM , GM ,VP , Account Director) a 2 year programme is not a good idea largely because the recruiters on campus are offering jobs to 26-27 years old with an experience of 3 -5 years. You will learn for sure but you might struggle to find a lateral position on campus.
3)Opportunity cost – if you are someone who is earning in the range of $60k-$100k picking up a 2 year course becomes very expensive. So you expense can actually go up to $ 250K -$300K(including the opportunity cost)
4)Marital status– Dynamics change if you have a wife, they change more if you have a working wife and she wants to continue working ( rule out US & UK) . One of the reasons I chose Insead over Kellogg 1 year was that my wife wanted to work as well and finding work in US is sort of impossible.
5)Kids – If you have school going kids brace yourself for a tough time , if your kids are very young you have to choose a place/country where you can bring them up well ( availability of domestic help , affordable medical expenses , moderate temperature )
6)Global economy – I am sure you are already aware of what’s happening around . Euro zone is going through a tough time and passing out in a country like Spain , Italy might be a bad idea . Germany and France might be better off a little but Asia definitely holds an advantage.
7)Visa norms and job market – A lot of my friends have completely ruled out UK because of their tough visa laws and current job market. Unless you are aiming at LBS.
8)What is your need – If you are doing it for just learning the field is open and schools across the world will provide you great learning. If you want just an international mba tag the field is again open for you but if you are looking at an ROI model and want to move to a better job/industry you need to be very cautious of the school you choose.
9)What field you want to work in – Finance/Marketing/Consulting/Entertainment/Sports/general management. every school has a specialization : Consulting –Insead/Havard , Finance – Columbia , LBS , Wharton , Stern , Chicago , Marketing –Kellogg .
10)Post MBA plan – If you want to stick to say INDIA go for an ISB /IIM these schools will be cheaper but would offer you good ROI . If you want to be a global citizen choose an international school recognized around the world. Also if you plan to join back /start your own business and all you want to learn is theory and understand the basics of management the field is open for you.
11)Financial health- We almost ignore it but ask yourself can you shell out INR 60-100 lakh / USD 140K. Will write more about this later.
Do create your own list
1)Age – If you are older than maybe 29 than a 1 year school will give you the best value as your opportunity cost for a 2 years course would be higher and you would be graduating with a class which would have an average age of 25 -27

Why a second MBA.
Unfortunately in India MBA is a must have degree to get a job and that is where it loses its relevance it’s something that you have to have and when you go through it you have absolutely no idea why you are doing it, you don’t know your strengths and you have no clue of the industry and by the end of it most students end up joining the companies which give you the best deal. You cant blame the students they are just doing what best they can in the situation.
Most MBA schools also suffer from the Academic fever and they judge you on how you performed on the coveted CAT and not on the basis of who you are and what you want to be, no one gives a F… about your personality and your people management skill. If they say they can check that in 1 round of GD’s they are bull shitting. Most top schools in INDIA have zero diversity and is filled with the same kind of students (all very strong in academics, they believe only in competition and most are engineers.) No I don’t blame the schools either, they are closing the need gap.
The professors in top schools are academic gurus , super smart and most with an IQ of 150 I think. They are great teachers of theory but they have minimal industry interface .Yes there are exceptions but most are academicians. I don’t blame professors it’s our society and industry which doesn’t place teachers in highest regard unlike west where most professors are also consultants to fortune 500 companies.
HR teams across the country take pride in the pedigree that they have bought to the table and they fight for day zero to get smartest (read the one with best grades) on board. The kids join the companies which offer most money or lucrative foreign postings. What happens after that is not known or never spoken about. Most leave their new employers within months because they cant take pressure or they hate what they have got , the ones who stick would get worn out and stop performing and the companies have to show them the door after a few years. The ones who stick are the ones who by some miracle land up in a job that fit there personally.
If you are smart enough ( dig maths ) and you get through an IIM A, B or C XL etc life is still sorted however if you get stuck in any of the category B schools you would get stuck somewhere around the middle management . Now that’s ok if you are not overtly ambitious or bright because you have may be reached your peak…but if you are both bright and you think you haven’t reached half your potential try an international MBA. Just make sure you settle for one of the top 10 schools.
What all you can expect from an international MBA I will try address later.

WHY MBA
I am dedicating my first post to this beaten to death topic which is also the most asked question in applications and in interviews. The answer is simple really because you want to grow in life . I believe that life is a set of concentric circles and you keep on graduating to the outer circles which are bigger and better. This graduation happens at different rates and the growth rate declines as you grow old.
There are some people who are unable to break out and so they make peace with the existing circle of life. Envision your school teachers who have been teaching the same class for 30 years , your college professors who are still teaching tuitions to earn little more money or public bank employees who have graduated to senior accountant in 15 years and now get the corner cubical . Nothing against all of them they have made peace with there lifestyles and are extremely happy and content.
But then there are people who are not the content kinds and who always want more from their lives, they are eager to learn , grow , travel the globe and may be rule the world .They want to be listened to , want to be respected by the respected, want to be page turners and most importantly create value in whatever they do. They want to keep on graduating to the next circle and evolve to the top of the food/corporate chain. If you belong to this set you should look at an MBA.
An MBA from a super school ( read top 10 in the world) will catapult you to the outer most set of circles , something which is alternatively only possible if you are as smart as Mr Facebook or as cunning as senior Ambani. If you are then may be you don’t need to spend 1 or 2 years studying management you should rather venture out work on your idea and make it big. However if you know yourself well and think that right now is not your time to venture out think MBA.
